This series is a narrative on our relationship with creative energy: how it moves through us, how we judge ourselves in the process, and what happens in the aftermath. These folk art-inspired figurative sculptures represent not only my personal journey as an artist, but the journey of anyone navigating the wilderness of their own creativity.
Boneheaded Ideas
The first sculpture in the series is about the place where the bones of an idea originate. We never know what will spark our imagination. Playing and remaining open, often to what appears to be ridiculous, are essential for the flow of creativity, because inspiration can come from unexpected places.
The Little Judge
The Little Judge is an imp who whispers in our ear, short-circuiting the flow of creativity with commentary. Any kind of judgment, good or bad, corrupts inspiration and disrupts the flow of the creative process and experiencing joy.
Who Made This?
This artwork refers to a sense of wonderment that descends–sometimes immediately, sometimes later–when a project is complete. Connection to the source of creativity is a two-way street. In the creative process, we allow something wider and deeper than ourselves to move through us. When the work is done, it breathes and takes on a life of its own, often leaving us to wonder where it came from.
