These are three objects that are special/sacred to me.
One is an argillite sculpture of a sea wolf, a mythical creature in Haida folklore. Only the Haida people (of Haida Gwaii, formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands off the coast of British Columbia) are allowed to quarry argillite. Something about the sea wolf and Haida legends speak to me. I also love holding the sculpture in my hands, feeling the cool, smooth stone. There is a quiet power in the stone that is palpable.
The other two objects are from my collection of natural elements, a sort of altar to life and death that resides in the entry of my home.
A red-tail hawk feather symbolizes Topanga for me, and reminds me how much I love this place. You can see in the close-up of my collection, below, that there are all kinds of feathers.
I’m also drawn to bird nests. One of my favorites is an abandoned hummingbird nest with two little eggs in it. The inside of the nest is lined with spider webs, which makes it very soft and delicate. It reminds me of how much beauty can be found in the small and subtle.
