Empty nest syndrome refers to a feeling of grief and loneliness parents may feel when their children leave home to live on their own.

This sculpture’s form was inspired by gourds, which are themselves containers of seeds for new life. As the gourd grows and dies, its decomposition feeds the sprouting seeds so that they can grow and live on.

The ashy bones, combined with an egg sitting in its nest, represents all of the possibilities in both children and parents starting a new life, recreating themselves from the fertile ground of parenthood.

ding the “black holes” of life.
