Where does wisdom reside? In our minds? Our beliefs? Beneath our conscious awareness? Wisdom is not something we create. It’s something we discover in ourselves.
In the middle of a yogic practice merging with fire, I started moving as fire in all of its forms. At first, I moved as embers, cracking and softly lifting. Then, my feet began to feel painfully hot. The fiery sensation moved up my body as I moved, flames licking up along my sides. I felt my hair on fire, singeing my scalp, and flesh melted off my bones. I was as my women ancestors, burning alive at the stake. I wept as their pain, their suffering was indistinguishable from mine. When all that was left was a pile of smoldering bones, I felt the embers glowing inside the bones as a kind of knowing, wisdom.
After the practice, this was etched into my psyche: Remember. Those embers are always there, waiting to be rekindled and set ablaze.
